We wait for joy to find us. It rarely does, because we never make room for it.
We schedule work, we schedule errands, we schedule the dentist. Joy gets what is left — which is often nothing.
Joy is not a reward for finishing everything. It is part of finishing well.
The people who seem most alive are not the ones with the easiest lives. They are the ones who put delight on the calendar on purpose.
Try it this week:
- One joyful hour, unscheduled from productivity. A film you love, a walk with no goal, music loud enough to sing.
- One small delight daily. Coffee you actually taste, ten minutes of a novel, a call that makes you laugh.
- Notice what delights you, then repeat it. Joy leaves traces. Follow them.
You do not need a perfect life to feel joy. You need to choose it, on purpose, before the week fills up without it.
Choose joy. The work will still be there — and you will be better for having paused.
