We study the trophy and ignore the traces.
The trophy is the photo. The traces are the habits that made the photo possible — the early mornings, the notes in the margin, the hundred small choices that never made it to Instagram.
Success leaves traces. Follow the traces, not the trophy.
If you want what someone has, study what they did when no one was watching. Not their announcement, but their calendar. Not their speech, but their schedule. The traces are always less glamorous than the trophy, which is why most people never follow them.
Pick one person whose work you respect. Do not copy their success. Copy one trace:
- How they start the day. What is the first hour for?
- How they handle the middle, when excitement is gone.
- How they end the day. What do they review?
Do that one trace for thirty days. Not perfectly, just consistently.
Trophies inspire. Traces instruct. Follow the traces long enough and the trophy stops being the point — the person the traces make of you becomes the point.
